Homily for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Year A) (1)

Homily for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Year A)

Theme: The greatest Testimony ever.

By: Fr. Justus Oruma.

(a) Christ became man. He was like us in all things except in sin; He was seen in the market place, in the Temple, in the play grounds. He made known through his words, his divinity too but seemed difficult for his followers to comprehend. He decided to Transfigure before some of them, to reveal his glorious side.

(b) The Book of Daniel, 2 Peter and Gospel of Matthew describe the radiance of this glory beautifully: a stream of fire poured out from his presence, his face was brilliant like the sun, his cloths became dazzling like the light. Subject to his divinity are the Laws (Moses) and Prophets (Elijah). All these show his might and glory. Thus, Christ as Man showed the glory than mankind share. Humanity does not just share in weaknesses and sicknesses. There is this glorious part that characterize each human person and all those who look upon this will be transformed from their suffering to the glory which is brought to perfection in the glory of heaven.

(c) Jesus warned them not to relate to anyone the glory they have seen untill after his suffering, death and resurrection. So, the feast of Transfiguration can be reflected upon together with the passion of Christ. Remember that this face that was brilliant like the sun was dealt with blows and spat upon during the passion. The garment so white like the light was torn to pieces during his passion. He seemingly lost all the glory being shamefully crucified naked between two thieves, yet the soldier looked at him in that state and said, “truly, this man is the son of God” This is the greatest Testimony which God gave of Christ on mount Tabor, “this is my beloved son” Therefore, the greatest event of the Transfiguration is not the shinning face and garments which were destroyed in the suffering man but the voice that thundered; “This is my beloved Son…”. This too, is our Testimony, our Joy, our Security, our Transfiguration despite the sorrows, difficulties and challenges of life: that we are children of God.
