CATHOLIC HOMILY FOR 6TH TUESDAY OF EASTER –YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 16:22-34; Psalm 137(138):1-3, 7-8; John 16:5-11

The disciples, Paul and Silas, praised God in prison and God delivered them, and through them saved others, including the jailer. God did not allow death to hold Jesus down in hades; God would not allow human cruelty triumph over his children. When Jesus was to return to the Father, he promised the Holy Spirit as a gift from the Father and himself, so that divine companionship would never depart from his disciples.

Jesus is our first Advocate with the Father and he continues to plead our cause; the Holy Spirit is the other Advocate. Both are the Father’s gifts for the continued availability of His unfailing and loving care to us. The coming of the Spirit ensured continuity after Jesus’ Ascension, to sure up the disciples in righteousness and give them the courage to oppose the cruelty of an evil and sinful world. Even though the disciples were saddened by the thought of Jesus’ exit, their joy was more than complete when they experienced the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in and through whom God and Jesus continue to bless us. As we await the celebration of Pentecost, let us welcome the Holy Spirit anew and in an active way. We need to build a stronger and more personal relationship with the Holy Spirit by inviting him to be part of our daily journey.

Lord, keep us under the cover of your Spirit. Amen
