HOMILY FOR MONDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARYT TIME – YEAR I

THEME: The Charity that’s worth the Name!

By: Rev. Fr. Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Rom.11:29-36; Lk 14:12-14

Our society is distinguished into different levels; the rich, the poor, and the not-so-rich. These lines aren’t drawn anywhere, but they’re visible even to the blind. Yes! Welcome to my country Nigeria. Big ceremonies are for the rich, and only the rich get invited. The not-so-elaborate celebrations are for the poor and those who fall somewhere in between.

In the gospel reading of this morning, Jesus encourages us to do good to those who have no way of repaying us. Friend, this is perhaps the only kind of charity that’s worth the name. Thus when we throw parties, give sums of money out, help someone in some way, because deep within we expect something back, we’ve at best engaged in some sort of business transaction; definitely and certainly not charity. This changes a lot of things for us. Does it not?

Prayer
Father, I resolve this day to give of myself and of my possessions to those who stand in need, without counting the cost, and without hope of getting repaid, Amen.

Good morning friends, God bless your week ahead.
