Homily for Friday – 28th Week in Ordinary Time Year A

HOMILY: 33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ( YEAR A )
Homily for Friday – 28th Week in Ordinary Time Year A Theme: All Puffed Up By: Deacon Bill Frere Gospel – Luke 12:1-7 Open Market, Jerusalem The leaves are falling off the trees. Daylight is getting shorter and shorter. And the temperature has quickly fallen. Summertime and warm weather is now just a memory. Trust me, I do like a crisp autumn day and the chance to walk (well, at least when I can fully heal and walk comfortably) around and enjoy the fall colors. But there is one thing that does not sit well with me. I still continue to bake bread on a regular basis. I even tried a new ‘easy’ bread recipe a couple of days ago. Eh! Not so good! There is nothing like slicing into a loaf fresh from the oven, slathering on some butter and biting into that warm goodness. But now that open windows and hot weather are gone, prepping the bread has become a bit more difficult. I don’t get the ‘rise’ out of the dough like I do in the summer. The bread comes out much lower than normal. The yeast I use is still good but the cool weather is not helping. And if I am going to get a good high loaf of bread, it has to rise! It has to ‘puff up.’ It’s all about the yeast! ALSO RECOMMENDED: Homily for Friday – 28th Week in Ordinary Time There is one verse in today’s Gospel that resonates with me! “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees.” Leaven! Yeast! That stuff that I depend on in order for my final product NOT to be a flat bread! So what is Jesus talking about? What is He warning His disciples about? Perhaps it is a reminder to them (and us) not to get ‘puffed up’ like the Pharisees! Jesus is cautioning us not to take on the attitude of the religious leaders of the time. Not to be proud or jealous, greedy or selfish, boastful or selfish or haughty! Not to develop feelings of superiority and then treat others as inferior! So maybe it’s time for a little bit of ‘flat bread’ in our lives, to not puff ourselves up with pride or selfishness, and not see ourselves as somehow better than others. To realize that we all make mistakes! But that the Lord loves us unconditionally! He is generous and compassionate and He asks us to treat each other accordingly!   For Similar Homily, Click Here>>>
