DAILY HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 34TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II.

THEME: SEE THE SIGNS.

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA.

In most parts of Africa, there are two main seasons: rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season is for planting and cultivation and in the dry season (harmattan), the grasses and rivers are dry, and the weather is cold (no snow though). The dry season is also a time of harvest and outdoor ceremonies. Human beings are SO familiar with natural seasons and fail to see God’s presence in all things. Jesus says: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees; as soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourself and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near” (Luke 21:29-31).

RELATED: DAILY HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 34TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II.

The kingdom of God comes near in dry and rainy seasons. In the dry season, it appears as the dark period of life when persecution and trials are rife and the rainy season is a time of joy when the Kingdom of God is revealed. Likewise, we can interpret the rainy season as a time of hardship and hard work because of the labour that goes into planting, weeding, and cultivation; the dry season which is a time of harvest and ceremonies could also be seen as a time of joy and manifestation of God’s kingdom. Either way, dry and rainy seasons come and go but the word of God and the kingdom of God endures forever. How good are we at reading the spiritual signs of the time?

LUKE 21:29-33;
