HOMILY THEME: UNEXPECTED HOUR

LUKE 12:39-48;

Readiness involves foresight and taking action before challenges arise. This is the reason why we gather firewood in the village during the rainy season to prepare for colder times. A bird knows the importance of readiness by constructing its intricate nest well in advance of the breeding season. This action is a meticulous effort to ensure a secure future. As the proverbial wisdom suggests, “He who plans for tomorrow, today will not be lost.”

Jesus taught his disciples about the importance of planning for his future coming. He said, “You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour” (Luke 12:40). Furthermore, Jesus advised his followers, not to be like servants whose master returned on an unexpected day and found them unprepared, lost in the orgy of violence, and living a hedonistic life of gluttony and drunkenness. He taught his disciples how to live responsibly until his second coming. He praises the faithful servant who works well while waiting for his master and denounces the servant who abdicates his duty and forgets about the responsibilities entrusted to him.

Jesus encourages us to imitate the faithful and diligent servant. We should always remember that readiness implies preparation, planning, and putting in the necessary work. Shall we be ready to give Him a good account of our stewardship when He returns?
