THURSDAY 5TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B (St Josephine Bakhita, Virgin)

HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 1ST WEEK OF LENT, LITURGICAL CALENDAR / YEAR B

THURSDAY 5TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B (St Josephine Bakhita, Virgin)

THEME: Watch your influencers!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

1 Kings 11:4-13; Psalm 105 (106):3-4,35-37,40; Mark 7:24-30

The first reading highlights the downfall of Solomon, who turned away from the worship of the one true God due to the influence of his wives. It emphasises the importance of not surrounding ourselves with the wrong people, as it can lead to our own downfall. The gospel reading on the other hand, tells the story of the Syrophoenician woman, whose faith, courage, and humility led Jesus to heal her daughter. This teaches us the power of perseverance and trust in God

Friends, we see the power of positive influencers at work in the life of St Josephine Bakhita. Though kidnapped and sold into slavery at an early age, she was rescued by an Italian family and taken to Italy, where she not only became Christian, but also felt the call of God to consecrate her entire life to God. St Bakhita reminds us that even the most abused can find healing and newness in God’s presence. Like the Syrophoenician woman’s daughter, St. Bakhita’s story offers us great hope amidst trials and tribulations. Through her prayers and intercession, may our many victims of trafficking and abuse today, find peace and solace in God’s healing touch, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead. St Bakhita, pray for us!
