Homily for Saturday October 9 2021
(Lk. 11:27-28) Saturday of the Twenty Seventh Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel Jesus was praised for His words and miracles. Again, He took advantage of the situation to teach. While His mother was blessed for having given birth to her, the blessed one is the one hears the Word of God and obey it.
Indeed, even today, many would say that blessed are parents who have their sons as priests. Indeed they are. But there is a better one. If children are good children of God, not necessarily priests, then their parents are blessed. It is a dream for parents to have reared their children not only as good citizens but also good Christians. It was what they had promised to God when they were baptized. Unfortunately, the rearing had been focused on making them rich, famous, powerful, and beautiful. The goal to make them good children of God, though intended, was not sustained. Of course, with some exceptions.
Today’s Gospel is a good reminder of this prime responsibility of parents and God parents. Fulfilment on this earth is not the ultimate goal of life. Getting to heaven and belonging to the Kingdom is.
