Homily for Saturday October 9 2021
(Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary).
Joel 3:12-21; Luke 11:27-28
At the reconsecration of our country Nigeria to the Immaculate Heart of Mary some years ago, a colleague of mine noticed the enthusiasm with which Catholics trooped to the middle of the large gathering to touch the stature of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and remarked, “if only we could practice our Christianity with this same enthusiasm…” I smiled. One of the major problems we have as a nation has always been the disconnect between religion and the practice of it.
Friends, today’s gospel reading is a reminder that God prefers hearers who practice what they hear than mere hearers without action. When a woman marvelled at the manner of man Jesus was, and praised his mother, Jesus seized the opportunity to remind everyone that it’s not just about listening to the word and being awed. It’s a lot better to practice what we hear. Mary was the perfect example of one who heard God’s Word and kept it. May we through her intercession, be led to put into practice that which we hear daily, and so find true happiness, Amen.
Good morning dear. God bless your weekend. Mary, help of Christians, pray for us.
