SATURDAY HOMILY FOR 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B]

SATURDAY HOMILY FOR 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B]

(Feast of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi, Patron of Nigerian Priests).

THEME: The Treasure that’s worth living for!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Phil.2:1-11; Is.12:1-6; Matt.13:44-46

Today, one funeral hymn comes to mind, “Tis heaven, Tis heaven, yes heaven is the prize…” Think about this hymn. To be a saint means to have won the prize, which is of course, heaven. Sainthood isn’t just about dying well, it’s more about living well. It’s about seeing everyone else as better than oneself. It’s about being humble and refraining from acting out of selfishness and conceitedness. Here, Jesus remains the perfect example. The one who was exalted for obeying, even when it meant death.

Friends, today we celebrate the Feast of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi. Born in Nigeria, in 1903, he was brought up by Spiritans and trained as a teacher and Catechist. After ordination to the priesthood, he later went to England and joined the Cistercian Abbey of Mount St Bernard. He was to later establish a Trappist Monastery in Onitsha. Friends, we celebrate Iwene Tansi today not just because he had black skin. But because he remains our shining example of patience and charity; a constant reminder that we too can live with great faith and humility, for heaven’s sake. Isn’t heaven worth living and dying for? Isn’t God’s dwelling worth giving up all of one’s possessions for?

Good day dear. Happy Feast of St Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi.
