REFLECTION FOR TUESDAY OF THE 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I

THEME: THE GOLDEN RULE.

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali.

In today’s liturgy, we are presented with Jesus’ teaching on the “Golden Rule” to treat others as you would like them to treat you. The motivation for this practical rule of life should not just be for others to treat us well, but that we love and care for others as persons created in the image and likeness of God.

In the gospel (Matt. 7: 6, 12-14), Jesus observes the golden rule as the summary of the Law and the Prophets. As disciples of Jesus, holiness of life need not be compromised. Rather, our gaze should be fixed on Jesus, the gate to the Sheepfold. As disciples of Jesus, challenges, sometimes very difficult ones, will come our way, but they will surely be of infinite value and blessings in the long run.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR THE 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

Abram, in the first reading (Gen. 13: 2, 5-18), observed the golden rule in relation to his nephew, Lot, offering a hand of reconciliation when misunderstanding broke out between their herdsmen. In being generous to his nephew, God blessed him by renewing the promises God has already made to him. Goodness begets contentment and blessing.
Dear friends, when we empty ourselves of selfishness, greed, unforgiveness, calumny and the like, God through the gift of His Holy Spirit pours His love into our hearts (Rom. 5:5), filling us with kindness, goodness, mercy, and charity. Contentment is the key to observing the golden rule. Am I avaricious in my dealings with others?

I pray as we journey in life today, the beginning words of the book of Psalms will be our guide: “Blessed is the one who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night (Ps. 1: 1-2). May the promise of abundance as was made to Abram be ours as we make our lives channel of God’s love. Have a contentment-full day!
