REFLECTION FOR SATURDAY OF 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I.
THEME: “STOCK TAKING.”
BY: Fr Francis Onwunali
God in today’s readings invites us for a round of “stock taking”. The Lord entrusts the subjects of his kingdom with gifts and graces and he gives his subjects the freedom to use them as they think best. With each gift and talent, God gives sufficient means (grace and wisdom) for using them in a fitting way.
In the gospel (Matt. 25: 14-30), Jesus presents the parable of the effective use of our God given talents in expanding the Reign of God’s Kingdom. The one who failed to use the given talent will eventually have it taken away. We are called to be responsible!
RELATED: HOMILY FOR THE 22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
St. Paul in the first reading (1 Th. 4: 9-11) urges the faithful to keep loving one another as God has first loved them. They are to manifest fraternal love- “philadelphia”, by living in tranquillity, minding “their own business,” that is, avoiding unnecessary talks or deeds against one another – being “busybodies”.
Dear friends, true Christian life abhors dormancy, and God does not condone indifference or the attitude of “it doesn’t worth trying.” As Christians, we have to constantly advance towards God with all the gifts and gracious opportunities that have been given to us.
I pray as we journey in life today, we will work aiming at hearing the voice of the Master saying to us: “Very well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful in a few things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your Master” (Matt. 25: 22). Have a Philadelphia-full day!
