Take care to guard against all greed

Monday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time, Year I.

By Rev. Fr. Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Theme: “Take care to guard against all greed!”
Rom. 4:20-25; Luke 12:13-31

I once had a friend who was selfish even to himself back in the day. He wasn’t so rich, but the little he had, he hoarded. I’ve been in situations when I’ve been really greedy too, wanting to ‘obtain’ everything for my own use. We all have our ‘greedy moments’. Today’s admonition is therefore to and for us. We’ve seen people die over something as little as a piece of meat. I once saw a video clip of a mobile policeman who shot sporadically into the air, putting lives at risk, because of ‘pomo’.

Friends, today, brothers kill brothers over plots of land. Families get torn over inheritance issues. Sons sell their fathers property, and squander the money in a life of irresponsibility, and men and women of God could keep malice for months because of tithes and stipends. Politicians maim one another to secure votes; the list is endless. In the midst of this greed and corruption, we must genuinely pray for the grace not to put our trust in material things. In the midst of his wealth, the rich man in today’s gospel reading was foolish, because he didn’t think about life after now. May we not be caught unawares. Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
