MONDAY HOMILY, 3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B]
THEME: Eternal sins?

2 Sam.5:1-7,10; Mark 3:22-30
In our Catechism days, we were taught that two of the sins against the Holy Spirit are resisting the known truth, and final impenitence. Resisting the known truth, and final impenitence are eternal sins that cannot be forgiven, because they totally reject the mercy of God. Jesus came and worked wonders through the finger of God, but scribes from Jerusalem, who should know better, condemned him and accused him of being possessed by a demon. This constant disposition towards resisting the known truth is what leads to dying without true repentance for sins (final impenitence).

Don’t we see what’s happening in Christendom today? Some years ago, I saw a video of a popular man of God instructing his followers to kill Fulani herdsmen if they came close to his Church, claiming that David killed Goliath. Seriously? This man knew this wasn’t Christ’s message, and thank God he later changed his point of view. Christianity has become a household so divided today that we wonder if we no longer follow the same Christ. It is true that Christ dealt sin a fatal blow and opened up the gates of heaven. But it’s not true that we automatically can go in if we fail to understand the meaning of that sacrifice. Why do we keep resisting the fact that Christ changed the world without raising a single sword? Can’t we do the same?
