HOMILY: THURSDAY 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: Between the women, Saul and Jonathan!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

1 Sam.18:6-9,19:1-7; Mark 3:7-12

Today’s first reading presents a sharp contrast in the reaction of Saul to the praise-singing of the women about David’s feat in killing Goliath the Philistine, on the one hand, and his son Jonathan’s intervention, on the other. It is true that the women weren’t the ones at fault here. Saul was. He allowed jealousy and envy to blind him from the genuine appreciation he ought to have shown to David for endangering his life on behalf of Israel.

Friends, though Saul listened to Jonathan for a while, he later on forgot his promise and continued chasing David; and for what? We can’t control what people say to us, but we can certainly control how we react to their words. The disposition towards jealousy and envy comes from an inner disposition of insecurity, and a lack of trust in God. Imagine the good all of us can do, if we stopped worrying about who takes the glory. May we find the grace to deflate our egos, that we may genuinely appreciate good deeds, irrespective of their sources, while focusing on making the world a better place like Jesus did, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
