HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY TWENTY-SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I (St Francis of Assisi).
By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)
HOMILY THEME: What’s our motivation?
Neh.2:1-8; Luke 9:57-62
I remember St Francis of Assisi as one who saw the good in everything and everyone. He gave up wealth to serve the poor and the needy. He could really sing; and it was he who founded the Order known as the Franciscans. There’s just too much to say about him. There’s something of the zeal of Francis that reminds us of the Apostle Paul; the manner in which he abandoned the life he used to know, to follow the one God called him to lead. From St. Francis, we learn that service to God and neighbour comes before anything else.

Friends, even though Nehemiah served in the King’s court in exile, he would prefer to go to the ruins of his home town and rebuild God’s temple. Jesus does not deceive us into believing that following him is easy. To the man who wanted to follow him, Jesus said “… the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.” To those who gave excuses when asked to follow, Jesus counseled by reminding them that their primary duty is to preach God’s word, for once the hand is laid on the plough, looking back is unacceptable. We may not be able to see the Moon as our sister, or the Sun as our brother, or even speak to birds and animals as Francis did, but we can decide today to follow Jesus genuinely.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead. St Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
