HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY – ORDIANARY TIME [YEAR A]

HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR B

HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY – ORDIANARY TIME [YEAR A]

THEME: The writing on the wall!

By Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Daniel 5: 1-6,13-14,16-17,23-28; Luke 21:12-19

Reading the handwriting on the wall can be a very difficult thing, even when it’s figurative. However, the handwriting that Daniel reads off King Belshazzar’s wall today is not figurative at all. There was actually something written on the wall by a visible hand. Must have been quite scary and eerie. This King did not only commit sacrilege by drinking wine from vessels dedicated to God, he went as far as praising his own gods of gold, iron and silver for victories they knew nothing about. One can imagine why he was summarily tried and found wanting.

Friends, Daniel never failed to speak the truth to power. He knew he had a gift bestowed upon him by God, and he used it judiciously. He didn’t become proud, neither did he arrogate powers to himself. Like a true Prophet, he read the handwriting on the wall and revealed truths beyond his human capacity. Being in exile became an opportunity for him to bear witness to the One true God. May we never be too swollen with pride as to forget that we’re nothing without God. May we not become too familiar with the things of God as to become sacrilegious. May our inheritance not be taken away from us and divided among others. Let’s read the handwriting on the wall and quickly make amends.

Good morning, God bless your day ahead.
