HOMILY FOR TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (Yr. A).

THEME OF THE HOMILY: THE STONE REJECTED BY THE BUILDERS…

The Christian life is a mysterious one. As you grow in faith the truth continues to unfold. In the Bible, parables are used to illustrate the reality behind hidden treasures. The hidden treasures are not discovered through ordinary human intelligence but by faith. For example, a watered and manued garden is expected to yield a bountiful harvest. But the prophet Isaiah tells us the opposite. He used the parable of a friend who had a vineyard. “He expected it to yield grapes, but sour grapes were all that it gave”(Is.5:1-7). Why sour grapes? We are the garden, we should bear good fruits not bad ones in this life.

For this reason, Paul says: “brothers, fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that we love and honour, and everything that can be thought virtuous or worthy of praise”(Phil.4:6-9). The mark of a good Christian is virtuous life. A life that gives others good examples to emulate. A good Christian should inspire others to do good.

In the Gospel Jesus also illustrates a good Christian life with another parable of a landowner. This man leased his well built vineyard to tenants expecting good returns from them. But they disappointed him by killing even his own son. What do we expect the landowner to do with the wicked tenants? We shall give the same answer as the chief priests and the elders of the people did. Yes, but we need to think deeply. The leaders of our world today are the tenants. They put Jesus aside and follow their selfish desires. That is why the world is experiencing hardships. Let all come back to Jesus for he is “the stone rejected by the builders who is the key stone” (Mtt. 21:33-43). May Jesus forgive us for the times we rejected him as the keystone of our lives, amen! Happy Sunday.
