HOMILY FOR TUESDAY 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B]

6TH SUNDAY HOMILY [YEAR B] IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY FOR TUESDAY 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B]

THEME: Looking Beyond Appearances: God’s Choice of David

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Our first reading (1 Samuel 16:1–13) reminds us that God looks beyond human appearances and sees into the heart. When Samuel was sent to anoint a new king for Israel, he was drawn to David’s older brothers, who seemed more likely candidates for the throne. But God told Samuel to look beyond their external qualities and to focus on the heart. And there he found David, the youngest and most modest of the brothers, whom God had chosen to be the greatest king of Israel.

This teaching is echoed in the Catholic Church’s emphasis on looking beyond human appearances. We are reminded that every person has inherent dignity and worth, regardless of their physical appearance, social status, or worldly achievements. We are called to see beyond the exterior and to recognize the beauty and potential within each person.

This requires us to cultivate the virtue of humility, recognizing our own limitations and biases. Like David, we must acknowledge that we are not always the best judges of what is good and right. Instead, we must trust in God’s plan and guidance, even when it goes against our human inclinations.

As we reflect our own lives, let us ask ourselves: Are we guilty of judging others by their appearance, failing to see the inherent goodness and potential within them? Do we trust in God’s plan, even when it transcends our understanding?

We may fall short in the following ways:

Making judgments based on physical appearance, fashion choices, or socioeconomic status rather than looking beyond external appearances.

Focusing on external validation rather than seeking the goodness and potential within others, as God sees it.

Allowing societal standards of beauty or success to shape our judgments rather than viewing others through the lens of God’s love and redemption.

Additionally, we may fail to trust in God’s plan by:

Doubting His sovereignty or wisdom in the face of challenges or circumstances beyond our understanding.

Presuming we know better than God and trying to control situations rather than surrendering to His will and guidance.

Neglecting to seek guidance from Scripture, prayer, and spiritual authorities when navigating uncertain situations.

May we learn from David’s example and allow God to work through us so that His kingdom may come, and His will be done. This is our prayer through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
