HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT.

THEME: COURAGEOUS PROPHET.

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA.

Truthful people are scarce in the world today because truth goes hand in hand with fearlessness and firmness. An African proverb says, “Be courageous if you would be true. Truth and courage go together.” The proverb admonishes anyone who wishes to stand for truth to be courageous. John the Baptist was a man of truth and was courageous in many ways. Several adjectives describe the personality of John the Baptist. He was Uncompromising, faithful, truthful, courageous, fearless, and incorruptible. He was a man of integrity who practiced what he preached. It is not surprising that Jesus showered encomium on him.

He says, John the Baptist is more than a prophet and that “Among those born of women none is greater than John” He is not the kind of person whom the book of Genesis describes as “unstable as water” (49:4). He was a man with unusual courage and challenged people to repentance and spoke truth to power. John’s life was short and fruitful. Wise people say, “It is better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep.” We should imitate the courage and consistency of John the Baptist “That we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles” (Ephesians 4:14). Can we imbibe the virtues of courage and truth as we prepare for Christmas?
