HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT. (1)

HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT.

THEME: SEEKING GOD’S ASSURANCE.

BY: Fr. Gerald M. Musa

We need assurance of God’s presence when we are depressed and disappointed. John the Baptist experienced a difficult moment in his life. He was arrested, imprisoned, and was to be executed.

He wondered if God was with him during that night of his life. He sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus: “Are you He who is to come or shall we look for another?” Jesus answered: “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them” (Luke 7, 20,22)

The purpose of this answer was to tell John that God is present and is near all those who suffer, including John the Baptist. Nigerians say when your neighbour is experiencing blessing, it means Jesus is in your neighbourhood. Whenever we are in pain or trouble we are often tempted to doubt the presence and power of God. We ask, “Jesus are you there for me?” Scriptures remind us, “The Lord is near” (Philippians 4:5).

Furthermore, a stanza in the famous hymn, ‘Blessed Assurance,’ reads, “Perfect submission, all is at rest; I and my saviour am happy and blessed; watching and waiting, looking above; filled with his goodness, lost in his love.” Do you pay attention to the powerful presence of God in your toughest moments in life?
