HOMILY FOR THE MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY

HOMILY THEME: Is it useless to serve God?
Malachi 3:13-20; Luke 11:5-13
There are those who see spirituality/religion as a complete waste of time. I empathize with them, no matter how misplaced this is. I pray they come to turning points in their lives, where they begin to see and think differently. Friends, we cannot presume that we’re here by some stroke of chance, and keep living a life that is totally devoid of faith. The prophet Malachi reminds us in the first reading, that a book of remembrance is being written. The day will indeed come, when all evildoers and the arrogant will be like stubble, to be burned up, leaving neither root nor stalk.
Friends, we mustn’t think that God showers his mercies upon us because we’ve been so good and holy. The parable that Jesus gives us in the gospel reading today, beside teaching that we should be insistent in prayer, also reminds us that God’s love for us is unconditional. Today, the Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which takes place in honour of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion at the ‘Battle of Lepanto’. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. As October devotion continues, may we not forget to take up our rosaries in faith, in constant spiritual battle against all evil forces besieging our country Nigeria.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as a new day begins, we your children continue to offer you praise and thanksgiving for the gift of life. May our constant devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary bring the world under her holy maternal influence, through Christ our Lord, Amen.
