HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE.

THEME: A SERVANT-LEADER.

BY: FR. GERALD M. MUSA.

A leader is a servant who leads by example. The story of James, the Apostle, and his mother’s request for her sons to have prominent positions in Jesus’ kingdom inspires us to reflect on the concept of servant-leadership. Jesus teaches that greatness comes with responsibilities and that true leadership involves serving others. The characteristics of servant leadership, as summarized by Larry Spears, include listening, empathy, healing, self-awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth ofpeople, and building community.

The celebration of St James the Apostle prompts us to contemplate these qualities and consider whether they manifest in our own leadership style. Jesus teachings emphasise the importance of humility, compasion, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others as essential traits for effective leadership. A servant-leader seeks to understand the needs of their followers, support their growth, and create a sense of community and trust within the goup.

This approach to leadership acknowledges that leading is not about seeking privilege or power, but rather about dedicating oneself to the service of others. The Feast of St. James serves as a reminder for us reflect on our own leadership practices and strive to integrate the principles of servant leadership into our lives. By doing so, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others and contribute to the betterment of our
ommunities and the world.
