HOMILY FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

THEME: “REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS CLOSE AT HAND”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 3rd Sunday in ordinary time, (Year A). At this moment we hear the preaching directly from Jesus himself. This is to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah . “The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light ..” (Is.8: 23- 9:3). Christ is the light of the world. Those who follow the light shall never live in darkness. The world was covered with darkness before Christ came to dispel it. He did this through the power of the Word. He himself is that Word of God that permeates every part of the globe. His word brings happiness, unity and peace. Anyone who hears his word must repent .

For this reason, Paul makes an appeal to the Corinthians and to the entire world to settle their differences. It is important to know that every part of the globe today is divided both economically, politically and religiously. In most cases the government in power find faults with opposition parties. Some even discriminate against those who did not vote for them. Certainly the world is divided and while some say we are for Paul, others say we are for Apollos (cf. 1Cor 1:10-13.17). This division among nations makes life difficult for the poor and the vulnerable.

Only faith in Jesus Christ can break these political, economic and religious bareers in the world. The way Christ solved the problem of division was by calling people from different backgrounds to be his disciples and apostles. He did not disqualify the fishermen or the tent maker or the tax collector. “He went round the whole of Galilee proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness among the people”( Mtt. 4:12-23). Above all, Jesus began his preaching with the message, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” This is a clarion call on all the leaders of the world to Repent! It is an appeal to all religious leaders to repent and to teach their followers the truth and not false doctrines. It is ironical that some religious bigots do the opposite of truth. Let everyone repent. Happy sunday.https://www.homilyhub.com/homily-for-the-3rd-sunday-in-ordinary-time-year-a/
