HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR A. (3)

HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR A.

THEME: “AS THE FATHER SENT ME, SO AM I SENDING YOU”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu.

This is the 2nd Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord! Yes, they rejoiced because they saw him physically. But those of us who did not see him physically should not doubt like Thomas. Jesus blessed those who did not see him but believed. It’s easy to say, “seeing is believing” but more blessed to believe without seeing. The highest expression of faith, trust and confidence is believing without seeing or touching. This is because, God is Spirit and those who believe in him should do so in spirit and truth.

That the disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord shows that they lived in unity, peace and love. Their devout life is summarized as follows: “The whole community remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the brotherhood, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42-47). In their unity they formed a formidable community. In their peace they attracted more followers and were looked up to by everyone and in their love they shared their food generously.

The doubting Thomas now believes because practical Christian life is clearly lived by the group of believers. That was then! But now we need unity, peace, love, compassion and Divine Mercy. We need God’s intervention in nations where there exists, division, religious discrimination, marginalization and and ethnic hatred. We need charity, justice, openness and truth. Let us see practical Christian life lived in joy because Jesus is among us. He is Risen indeed! We can now feel and touch the wounds caused by hunger among poor nations, the scares of war ravaged places and the nail marked made on the orphans and widow’s among us. Happy Sunday!.
