Theme: SACRIFICE TO SAVE

By: FR GERALD M. MUSA

Homily for Saturday April 9 2022

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, many more people believed in Him. Thereafter, He was arrested and brought before Caiaphas the high priest and the Pharisees who deliberated on how to eliminate Him. They said, “This man performs many signs. If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy, both our holy place and our nation” (John 11:47-48). Caiaphas the High Priest advised, it is expedient that “One man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish” (John 11:50). Caiaphas spoke like a patriot who was defending his nation, yet he did not speak of his own accord, because his statement was prophetic and a divine oracle. His statement pointed to the fact that Jesus would not only die for the nation but gather into one the children of God scattered abroad. The prophecy of Caiaphas presents Jesus as a scapegoat on whose head is placed the sins of the people and as the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. His prophecy captures the mission of Jesus on earth which is dying for the redemption of many. Every family, every community, organisation, and nation is built upon people who made sacrifices for the sake of others. What sacrifice are we making to save, give life, hope, and a good future for others?
