Homily for Saturday December 18 2021

Jer.23:5-8; Matt.1:18-24

It’s exactly seven days to Christmas, and the readings from this second half of the Advent season remind us of the nearness of the baby Jesus. Think about this for a second. At about this time thousands of years ago, a virgin was indeed with child. She was close to full term. Imagine how Joseph and his family must have felt – the overwhelming sense of expectation.

Friends, this is the same kind of expectation that should move us to action. Jeremiah reminds us in the first reading that the baby who is to be born is a virtuous Branch for David. He will be wise, practising honesty and integrity in the land. It’s therefore obvious that we cannot receive one who is virtuous without being virtuous ourselves. We cannot prepare for one of integrity without being persons of integrity ourselves. Do our daily actions reflect God’s presence among us?

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
