HOMILY FOR MEMORIAL OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS.

THEME: THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS.

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA.

HOMILY FOR JANUARY 3RD.

A proverb among the people of Ilaje in North-Western Nigeria, says, “As the name, so is the bearer, as the nickname, so also the bearer.” The name, identity, and mission of Jesus give credence to this proverb. The name ‘Jesus’ is derived from the Hebrew ‘Yeshua’ which means “Salvation” (God saves). In his name, many difficult and humanly impossible tasks are accomplished (Mark 16:17- 18). St. John instructs, “…We should believe in the name of…Jesus Christ” (1 John 2:23). St. Peter says, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved” (Acts of the Apostles, 4:12).

St. Paul proclaims, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11). All followers of Christ should proclaim and promote the name of Jesus. Many Centuries ago, St. Bernadine of Siena raised awareness about the power of the name of Jesus and in Nigeria, Sir Alexander E.U. Ameh, KSM (of Blessed Memory) founded the Holy Name Fellowship in the Catholic Diocese of Kano. Indeed, “the Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the just man runs to it and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10). Do we realise that imitating the life of Jesus is another way of promoting his name?
