FRIDAY HOMILY: 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR II (Feast of the Presentation of the Lord).

THEME: Jesus’s Dedication!

Mal.3:1-4; Ps. 23(24):7-10; Luke 2:22-40

Baby dedications are usually joyful ceremonies. Today is Jesus’ day, and as first born male, he is brought into the temple as the Law prescribes, to be presented to God. As soon as the Prophet Simeon holds the child in his hands, he knows this is indeed the promised Son of God; the one who is to bring light to all the nations. The Prophetess Anna isn’t left out. She praises God, and speaks of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.

Friends, today Jesus enters the temple of our hearts as refiner and purifier. He brings light to all the dark places, and life to whatever is decayed or dead in us. Jesus became man that he might free us from the yoke of slavery and lead us to God. This is another opportunity for us to re-examine our lives. As we begin our Mass today with lighted candles, exactly forty days after Christmas, we’re reminded that Jesus calls out to us daily. Are we ready to receive him? Can we give him a place in the temple of our hearts? May we by God’s grace, let go of sin and give grace a chance, Amen.
