DAILY HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLE II

THEME: THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA

HOMILY FOR TUESDAY JUNE 21 2022

A journey begins with the choice of the road one wishes to follow, and this vital choice determines the destination. Jesus loves to use metaphors, and this time he uses ‘wide gate’ (road) and ‘narrow gate’ (road). Jesus says, the wide and broad gate “is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it” (Matthew 7:14). The wide gate is the path that is guided less by Gospel principles and more by feelings, what is trending, instinct, self-satisfaction, and popular opinions that say, “If you cannot beat them join them,” and “Do whatever works for you,” “Just do it” or “Follow your heart.” These popular opinions are strong, especially in business and profit-making, power grabbing struggles (politics), and the entertainment industry. Conversely, the narrow gate is the harder, rugged, unpaved, bumpy, and more difficult path to follow. The Apostle Paul admonished the Romans to follow the narrow gate when he wrote “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2). To follow the narrow way is to follow the road less travelled. Do we always live by the broad gate of popular opinion and what is trending or do we follow the unpopular and time-tested narrow path of the gospel which leads to everlasting life?
