28TH SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A

THEME: Are you Ready and Worthy?

Every invitation has its target guests, just as every event has its qualification standards. But meeting those standards doesn’t mean we should undermine them or take them for granted. Those who know how to drive a car are often overconfident during driving lessons. A star player at a big club may not take a game against small teams too seriously until he starts losing, and so he flops when he takes his opponent for granted. That is why it is always disappointing when star players underperform in such matches, so when they are replaced by average players, the team plays better; what has changed in the game is not the standard of play, but the approach to the game. Our value for something often affects our interest in it and vice versa, which is reflected in our performance. You need to put your heart into something to be able to achieve the most. How can you win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket?

Our readings this Sunday call on us to always prepare for God’s kingdom, in order to be worthy of it. God has blessed us with numerous gifts in this life to bring us closer to Him and prepare us for His ultimate gift, His kingdom. But we often get carried away with what we have achieved and become more consumed with other interests such as work, tasks, leisure, vacations and games which we prioritise over the salvation of our souls. Like the invited guests in the gospel, we received God’s invitation when we promised at baptism to love, serve and worship God in our lives. Those who turned down God’s invitation for other priorities, have rejected Him by their indifference. To respond to God’s invitation, we must be ready, but also worthy, so that we don’t show up in the wrong attire, like someone who went to an event without signing up. One cannot play a game with the wrong kit or use a plane ticket without checking in. Those who don’t take God seriously reject Him through their irreverence. To be worthy of God’s kingdom, each of us must resolve that nothing can take the place of God in our lives, because we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.

Remain lifted and do have a great Sunday
