1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: HOMILY – YEAR B

THEME: “AND WHAT I SAY TO YOU I SAY TO ALL: STAY AWAKE”

This is the 1st Sunday of Advent (Yr.B). It is the time of expectation. A time we expect and await the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ into our lives. It is a time that requires adequate preparation . We must stay awake in prayers and good works. Those who love God must be ready for him at all times. The prohet Isaiah says: “You, Lord, yourself are our Father, our Redeemer is your ancient name… Why, Lord leave us to stray from your ways… Return, for the sake of your servants” (Is.63:16-17ff).

This returning of the Lord is what we are waiting for during this season of Advent. The promise of the Lord’s coming is true because Paul says: “The witness to Christ has indeed been strong among you so that you will not be without any of the gifts of the Spirit while you are waiting for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed” (1Cor. 1:3-9). He will be revealed in our hearts and we will be renewed persons.

The truth about this promise is that, “Jesus said to his disciples: Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come. … And what l say to you I say to all: Stay awake” (Mk.13:33-37). Staying awake here implies being steadfast in faith and commited to good works. As we await the coming of the Lord, let us love one another. Let there be an end to wars and other crimes. May the Lord find us ready when he comes, amen. Happy Sunday.
