WEDNESDAY HOMILY, 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A)
THEME: It’s Gonna Take Some Effort
Gospel – Luke 14:25-33
Roman Ruins, Caesarea Maritima
One year ago we found out we needed a new roof!!! Of course, it was not as simple as just ordering one online. It can’t be a rushed decision! We need to check out Angie’s List or Home Advisor for local and reputable companies. It means checking out references and then getting a couple of estimates before finally making a choice. You know the drill – lots of planning and prioritizing, much less deciding how to pay for it. Ugh! And that doesn’t even include setting aside all those other items on our ‘wish’ list or ‘to-do’ list. So much for that weekend getaway or that super-size smart TV or those extravagant Christmas presents. Necessities – we all have them! I mean, we all need a roof over our heads, right?

There are no rosy words or comforting remarks in today’s Gospel. Jesus makes it very clear – being Christian, being a disciple demands effort and sacrifice. This is not a hobby or some weekend pastime or only a Sunday obligation. It is not something that just happens by accident. It takes time, planning, preparation, and work, like planning for a new roof. And it means setting aside some things so that we can focus on what is most important – being a lifelong faithful disciple! It means setting priorities, turning your back on some things in order to focus on what is most important!
So prepare! Set your priorities! Prepare to build your tower of faith, knowing that you will have to turn your back on other projects and interests. And be prepared to battle against the forces of darkness and greed and selfishness, to suffer for the sake of eternal life.
Great Spirit, teach me today to walk in prayer and to keep my faith strong!
