MONDAY HOMILY: BAPTISM OF THE LORD – YEAR B

THEME: Your past hurt is not an excuse not to trust again or hurt others.

BY: Fr. Anthony O. Ezeaputa

Samantha had a difficult childhood. Her parents were alcoholics, and she often felt neglected and unloved. As a result, she struggled with trust and intimacy in her adult relationships.

When Samantha met Michael, she was hesitant to open up to him. But Michael was kind, patient, and understanding, and slowly, Samantha began to trust him. They fell in love and were happy together for a while.

However, as time went on, Samantha’s past hurt and fears resurfaced. She started to push Michael away, testing his love and commitment to her. She would become jealous and accusatory, convinced that he would leave her like her parents had.

Michael tried to reassure Samantha that he was different, that he loved her, and that he would never hurt her. But Samantha couldn’t shake off the fear and pain from her past. She started to lash out at Michael, hurting him with her words and actions.

One day, Michael had had enough. He told Samantha that he understood her past hurt, but it wasn’t an excuse to hurt him, an innocent person who loved her. He said that he wouldn’t stay in a relationship where he was constantly being hurt and belittled.

Samantha was devastated. She realized that she had been using her past as an excuse to sabotage her relationship with Michael. She sought therapy and began to work through her childhood trauma. It wasn’t easy, but she learned to love herself and trust others again.

If Samantha hadn’t faced her past hurt and sought help, she might have continued to hurt innocent people, like Michael, and missed out on the opportunity to experience healthy, loving relationships. By confronting her pain and learning to love again, Samantha broke the cycle of hurt and started a new chapter in her life.
