Knock, Knock

Gospel – Luke 11:5-13

A ten-year-old boy begged his parents for a TV for his bedroom. He was persistent, impatient and probably a bit annoying as he continued to ask his parents over and over again to give him what he thought he desperately needed. In response, the one thing his parents did NOT do was run out and buy that TV for him. Instead they provided him with a number of opportunities to earn money so that he could buy the TV himself. He faithfully saved his money from chores, birthday and Christmas presents. Finally with a big smile on his face, he walked into the store with money in his pocket and bought that TV himself!

Frequently we read today’s Gospel and we picture ourselves as the homeowner receiving that knock on the door and debating whether to answer the call. But let’s turn it around. What if we were the one knocking on the door, seeking help and assistance?

Ask and you shall receive! Seek and you will find! Knock and the door will be opened to you! They are words of promise and hope! However there is one simple thing they all have in common! Action! They all require action on our part! We have to put in the effort and do something! We have to work and not merely take our faith for granted. That little boy thought that all he had to do was ask and his parents would just buy that TV.

And so it is for us. We are called to not just think about our needs/concerns/petitions. We are called to pray – to take action and ask – direct our messages to the Lord. We are called to seek, to purposefully search for the Lord in Scripture, in meditation, and in the Sacraments. And we are called to knock – to take action and go knocking at the Lord’s door. We are called to be patient and persistent!

Those parents did answer that little boy’s request but they did it in an unexpected way and in their own time. God is always there when we pray, when we search for Him, when we knock at His door! Have the faith and the patience to believe He will always answer us! So keep knocking! Day in, day out, keep knocking!!
