HOMILY FOR TODAY – 26TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL

‘See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven’ (Matthew 18:10)

We celebrate the the Feast of the Guardian Angels today. It is an opportunity to appreciate the infinite goodness of God who has given us a special angel to minister to our physical and spiritual needs.

There are many references in the Old Testament supporting the fact that angels are protectors of individual persons. In the First Reading today (Exodus 23:20-23), God says, ” Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared.” In Genesis 18-19, we read that angels protected Lot from danger. In Exodus 32:34, we read where God said to Moses, “My angel shall go in front of you.” In Daniels 10, we read of angels who are entrusted to protect certain districts. One angel is called the “prince of the kingdom of the Persians.” Michael, the archangel, is called “one of the chief princes.” (Dan. 12:13) In the Book of Sirach, we read, “He appointed a ruler for every nation, but Israel is the Lord’s own portion.” (Sir. 17:17)

The New Testament also has specific cases of angels coming to assist those in need. Mark records the story of the angels who ministered to Jesus when He was in the wilderness for forty days. (Mk. 1:13) In the Acts of the Apostles, we read of the angel who freed Peter from prison. [Acts. 5:19] In the Letter to the Hebrews 1:14, we read, “Are not all angels spirits in the divine service, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?”

Life’s journey is a consistent battle against forces that impede our spiritual goodness. Without God’s help, our efforts to win our futile. The Guardian angels are sent by God to lead and protect us on the path of our salvation. We are once again reminded of how much God loves us by providing the security we need. May our Guardian angels continue to protect us all. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits thee here. Ever this day, be at our side, to light, to guard, to rule, to guide. May God have mercy on us, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
