HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME. (1)

HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

THEME: THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS.

BY: Fr. Justin Nzekwe.

The time for the second coming of Jesus, has brought a lot of confusion. Many persons in the past have prophesized about the date for the second coming of our Lord, but all those dates turned out to be false. In the days of Saint Paul, the Thessalonians refused to work because they consider it as a waste of time, since Jesus is coming very soon.

Saint Paul warned them that those who refuse to work, should not eat. In today’s gospel reading, Jesus says, “Vegliate, perché non sapete in quale giorno il Signore vostro verrà.” It is obvious that Jesus wants us to be prepared always for his second coming, but he did not tell us the exact date or hour. Many people have lost patience and refuse to wait anymore. They chose instead to wander away from God and live their lives as though God does not exist. The truth is that Jesus has continued to come again among us on personal level, but many of us have failed to notice his visits. Every day, he comes to pick the saints among us, we cry and wipe our tears, but those people have experienced personally the second coming of Jesus. They have begun to receive their rewards in heaven as faithful servants. Jesus in the gospel reading also spoke about the unfaithful servant who thinks that their master will not come back soon, and went about living an irresponsible life. They are those who died as sinners, and who will receive punishment in hell or in purgatory.

However, there will surely be a day Jesus will come again and, all those who are alive by then will meet him. Hence, our life on earth would have been spent in futility if Jesus did not meet us righteous on his second coming. Our vocation as Christians is to live a life of holiness, and faithfulness to God. We are called not to worship God out of the fear of hellfire. We are instead called to be a light to the world as children of light. Above all, Jesus chose to come on the hour we do not know in order to know those who are faithful, and those pretending to love him. We therefore pray in this holy mass that whenever Jesus comes again, we may be prepared to meet him as faithful servants, and that we may receive the reward of all our sacrifices while on earth.
