HOMILY FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A. (7)

HOMILY FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A.

THEME: GOD QUENCHES OUR THIRST.

BY: Rev. Fr. Justin Chima Obijuru

R.1: Exodus 17:3-7
R.2: Romans 5:1-2.5-8
Gospel: John 4:5-42

Today is the third Sunday in Lent, Year A. The theme of today’s readings focuses on human thirst. We all have experienced thirst in life. Our yearning can become unbearable. We can feel its demands and quest for satisfaction. The first reading and the Gospel speak to us of water. In the desert, the Israelites survived because God provided water for them. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of new water to the Samaritan woman. This water is a life giving spring which doesn’t dry up. Jesus’ spring of water is a new life, which He has come to give us.

In today’s Nigeria, we are being reassured of God’s nearness and saving power, God is not deaf or blind, unfeeling or indifferent to what is happening with us. His name is “I am who I am” – the one and only – who is there always for us and with us. We have to be aware of this. God’s presence is grace – opportunity to bear fruit of repentance and be saved. His grace quenches our thirst. We shall not give up in our fight to let good and integrity prevail over evil.
Happy Sunday!
