HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS YEAR A (3)

HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS YEAR A

THEME: God’s love for his chosen people.

BY: Fr. Justin Nzekwe

As we celebrate today the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we remember that the heart is a symbol for love. Today’s reading therefore focuses on God’s love for those whom he has called to be in relationship with him. This loving relationship is manifested in God’s dealings with the Chosen people; that is the Israelites of old, and those who have come to believe in Jesus Christ.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF SACRED HEART OF JESUS.

In the first reading, Moses reminds the Israelites saying, “You are a consecrated people to the Lord your God: the Lord your God has chosen you to be his particular people among all the peoples that are on the earth.” God chose them out of love, and not because they are better than the rest of humanity. In the gospel, Jesus thanked his Father for revealing to his chosen ones what he has hidden from the wise and learned. This revelation is as a result of God’s love for his chosen people.

However, the highest revelation which we are celebrating today is the gift of the heart of Jesus, which is sacred, and filled with love and compassion. Some of us are worried because of sin, some are heartbroken, some are sick, some are living in fear. Whatever problem you have, remember that we are consecrated to God and that the sacred heart of Jesus can conquer all our problems with his love for him. Therefore, as I end this homily, I remind all of us once again the message of Jesus in the gospel reading of today. He says, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your life. For my yoke is easy and my weight is light.” Let these words of Jesus be our consolation, and let it be the foundation of our faith. And may the sacred heart of Jesus continue to reign in our lives, amen.
