HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING.

THEME: YOU ARE PART OF HIS KINGDOM.

BY: Fr Livinus C. Igbodekwe.

Introduction
In any domain where rational creatures exist, there must be dominion, rulership or kingdom. And, only human beings and spirit beings could be properly said to be rational. Therefore, there exist two kingdoms: physical kingdom and spiritual kingdom. In the physical kingdom, there is a human king; and in the spiritual kingdom, there are two kingdoms: the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness (Col 1:13). There are princes, powers and rulers in the spiritual realm.

1. The Human Kingdom: in the human domain, a man is chosen, anointed and crowned king to rule over the people. In the early years of Israelite monarchy, Saul, son of Kish was chosen, anointed and crowned king (1 Sam 10:1). Everyone submits their wills to him and bind themselves to obedience to him. The king obeys no one except God. Saul failed to obey God and God rejected him (1 Sam 15:22-23). Then God found a king in David, son of Jesse. He was chosen by God, anointed by Samuel, crowned thrice by Southern and Northern Israel (1 Sam 16; 2 Sam 2; 2 Sam 5; ). And, even though David was a man after God’s heart, he sinned against God by coveting Uriah’s wife and killing him. All the human kings of Israel and Judah, after David all failed, as well. The only hope then was to look towards the coming of the Messiah-king.

2. The Spiritual Kingdom: Satan rules over the dark kingdom (Eph 6:12) and God rules over the kingdom of light (James 1:17). These kingdoms are separate and cannot mix together (2 Cor 6:14). But, both kingdoms have a common interest – the earth. This is the reason Satan showed Jesus the kingdom of this world and its glory, promising Him to hand them over to Him if He would bow to him. But, Jesus didn’t oblige him. He rather chose to purchase it by His blood.

3. The Kingdom of the Christ: for the kingdom of this world to become the kingdom of the Christ, it will require a sacrifice which would cause a man to die. His throne, in other words, will be built on the cross. He entered as a king into Jerusalem to die a shameful death on a cross. He turns our curses into blessings (Gal 3:13); turned our shame into dignity, He became poor that we may become rich (2 Cor 8:9) and our ashes into beauty (Isaiah 61:3). He now calls us to participate in that kingship which will require our crosses and our blood. It is when we die with Him, that we shall reign with Him(2 Tim 2:11).

Happy Sunday to you all!
Christ is our King! Alleluia!
