HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD. (3)

HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD.

THEME: “THIS IS MY SON, THE CHOSEN ONE. LISTEN TO HIM.”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This Sunday (which is the 18th in ordinary time, Yr. A ), falls on August 6th which is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. To be transfigured is to change in appearance, to become radiant or beautiful in form and in spirit. It involves a total human transformation in body and spirit into a new person altogether. The beaming light from a transfigured body dazzles the eyes of those around. This was what Peter , James and John experienced when Jesus took them to the high mountain (cf. Mtt. 17:1-9). He changed and his clothes became as white as the light flashing from above. The scene was amazingly seren and beautiful. Moses and Elijah appeared! A voice came from the cloud saying: “This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.”

From this episode of the Lord’s transformation we learn that: Jesus is both divine and human. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is the Chosen One of God. We must listen to what Jesus tells us to do. That all prophecies about Jesus are true. Daniel says: “And I saw, coming from the clouds of heaven, one like the son of man” (Dn. 7:9 -10.13-14). The presence of Moses here reminds us of the commandments of God. The presence of Elijah shows that the message of the prophets are truly from God.

It is important that we apply the transfiguration of Jesus to ourselves. Doing this means that we should constantly be transformed by the word of God we hear. We should pray constantly as Jesus did. We should not doubt the teachings of the apostles about Jesus. Saint Peter says: “It is not any cleverly invented myths that we were repeating when we brought you the knowledge of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: we had seen his majesty for ourselves ” (2 Pt. 1:16-19). The testimonies of the apostles concerning Jesus are true. May the word of God we hear help us to be transfigured like Jesus, amen. Happy Sunday.
