SUNDAY HOMILY: 31ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A

HOMILY FOR SUNDAY; WEEK 29 ORDINARY TIME -YEAR A

Homily theme: “WHY DO YOU SET THIS TRAP FOR ME?”

By: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 29th Sunday in ordinary time (Yr. A). All human beings are under God. That is why it is said that, “there is no king as God,” and “All power belongs to God.” All those in authority must respect God who is above all. He says to them, “Though you do not know me, I arm you that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that, apart from me, all is nothing” (Is. 45:1.4-6). God is king above all the earth.

In the same way, Paul encourages the Thessalonians to have strong faith in God. “We know, brothers, that God lives you and that you have been chosen ” (1Thes. 1:1-5).
Our Lord Jesus Christ is neither greedy nor selfish. He gives each person what is due to him or her. He treats everyone equally and upholds the common good. While Jesus challenges those in authority he always gives them their due for proper governance. Yet, most of those in political authority feel threatened by his preaching.

The question the Pharisees and Herodians asked, “is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” Is a trap for Jesus. He asked them, “Why do you set this trap for me?” (Mtt. 22:15-21). They wanted to put Jesus into trouble with the civil authorities. What belongs to Caesar is worldly. Money is worldly but its use is to care for the common good . When we pay tax government should use it for the common good. But what belongs to God is spiritual. God is all in all and we must worship him. All glory, honor and adoration belong to God. Civil authority is temporal but God is eternal. Only God shall we worship. Let us pray that we give God all worship but perform our civic responsibility.  Happy Sunday.
