HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

5TH SUNDAY: HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B

HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: “Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge Your people and to distinguish right from wrong” (1 Kgs. 3: 9).

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Above is the request that Solomon made when God offered him the privileged opportunity to make a request of his choice in the first reading (1 Kgs. 3: 4-13). Instead of asking for personal gain, protection, and wealth, he asked for the required wisdom to care and lead God’s people. He sought to be a Shepherd unto Gods people. If God gives you such an opportunity today, what will you request?

In the gospel (Mark 6: 30-34), when Jesus saw the huge crowd, He took pity on them because they were like Sheep without a Shepherd, and He set Himself to teach them at some length.

Dear friends, wisdom is applying truth to ones life and the lives of others. David sought truth from the author of Truth so that he could see and do things as God would have them done. Jesus, Wisdom Incarnate, became a Shepherd to the people who were like sheep scattered without a Shepherd. Our lives can only be well organized and guided if they are focused on Jesus Christ, the Wisdom of God. Do I live for myself, or do I live for God and for others?

I pray as we journey in life today, we will conscientiously seek to be in touch with God always so that God’s Will, will drive our actions. Let us like the disciples listen to the voice of the Master Who calls us out to a lonely place to be with Him. Let us constantly “rest our head on the chest of Jesus and hear the heartbeat of the Master.” Have a wisdom-full day!
