HOMILY FOR SATURDAY 3RD WEEK IN LENT / YEAR B

HOMILY FOR THE  2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR B

HOMILY FOR SATURDAY 3RD WEEK IN LENT / YEAR B

THEME: True contrition!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Hos. 5:15-6:6; Luke 18:9-14

Pride is bad enough. However, spiritual arrogance is worse. Yes! Imagine going before God’s presence only to begin recounting how good we’ve been. We remind him of how charitable we’ve been; how we’ve never failed to pay our tithes… Then we begin to thank God that we’re better than the rest of mankind; we quickly recall Musa the alcoholic, and Matilda the prostitute. We’re so happy that we’re not like them…

On the other hand, imagine you come before God’s presence and you beat your chest and recall your many faults. You realise that whatever good you’ve been able to do is by God’s grace, hence you cannot take the glory for them. So, instead of swelling up with pride, you’re so full of contrition for not being the best you could have been, even with God’s constant grace. So you humbly ask him for mercy, and sustained grace to carry on. Friends, this latter example is true contrition. God simply cannot hear the first prayer, because it’s so swollen with pride, it can’t take anyone into His presence. May God give us the grace to be truly contrite and repentant of our sins, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend.
