*FROM THE FIRST READING*
In todays first reading, the elders and scribes are ordering Peter and John in a threatening manner not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. The response of Peter and John was to go the community of believers and in their presence to pray, asking God for help to proclaim the gospel ‘with all boldness’. As they prayed, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and in the strength of that Spirit they proclaimed the word of God courageously. We need the same courage and boldness to proclaim the gospel of the Lord today. Our calling is to open our hearts ever more fully to the powerful presence of the Spirit, whom the Lord continues to pour out on all who know their need of the Spirit.

*FROM THE GOSPEL READING*
In the gospel reading, Jesus communicates to Nicodemus just how important the Holy Spirit is if he is to enter the kingdom of God. Jesus says to him that he needs to be born from above, to be born of the Spirit, if he is to see and enter the kingdom of God. We were born of the Spirit at the time of our baptism. Each day we need to open ourselves afresh to the movement of the Holy Spirit within us. Like the wind, the Spirit blows where it pleases; it blows where the Lord pleases. We need to keep trying to go where the Spirit is leading us.

*CONCLUSION*
What does this new birth or born again theory mean? The new birth Jesus speaks of is a spiritual birth to new life and relationship with God as his sons and daughters. New birth is to enter that society in which God is honored and obeyed, to live as His son or daughter and to enter into possession of that life which comes from God Himself, a never-ending life of love, peace, joy and freedom from sin and the fear of death. This new birth is made possible when one is baptized into Christ and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. Therefore we can say that these words, “born from above” and “Born of water and the Spirit” can be a clear reference to the Sacrament of Baptism by which we are initiated into the Christian life. Baptism makes us new creatures of God. Like for example: from children of wrath, we are transformed into children of God.
