HOMILY FOR 1ST SUNDAY ADVENT IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

2ND SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR B - HOMILY/YEAR B

HOMILY FOR 1ST SUNDAY ADVENT IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

By: Fr. Justus Oruma

(a) This all important season of Advent is there again. Here we have at least 4 weeks time. A time which teaches us how to “get prepared”. Advent from the Latin word “Adventus” means “the arrival”, “the coming”. Here we are getting prepared for the coming of Christ.

(b) Jesus admonishes us “to stay awake”. Works and duties have been given to us. We are not to be caught sleeping on duty and dead in Faith by the arrival of Christ. We are to greet the coming of Christ- attending to good works of mercy, as St Paul puts it, so that we may “not be lacking in any gift as we wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed” (1 Cor.1:7). This is a time to acquire some virtues and unlearn some vices.

(c) We are not to be carried away soley by the shoppings and holidayings that characterize the weeks before the Christmas. Stay awake doing charity and good works. The same word “Adventus” translates the Greek word “Parousia” which means the Second coming. Advent season does not only teach us about the preparation for the coming of the Christmas but most importantly for the Second coming of Christ. Stay Awake!
