HOLY FAMILY: SUNDAY HOMILY, YEAR B
THEME: THE CHILD GREW IN WISDOM AND GOD’S. FAVOR WAS WITH HIM
BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu
On this Sunday within the octave of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Feast of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is a model family for those who fear the Lord, who live in peace and are united in love. Every genuine family is a domestic Church and the first kindergarten where a child learns moral and cultural values. This feast of the Holy Family teaches us the importance of unity, peace and love. It is an exemplary family that carried out a unique child dedication ceremony as required by the law of the Lord (cf. Lk.2: 22-40). The Holy family is down to earth.

This example by the Holy family is a great inspiration to our modern families today. We should learn from this family to respect God’s law. The Holy family did not ignore what is good and worthy of doing. This family nurtured Jesus to accomplish the task of our redemption. Jesus learnt to eat, pray and to love from this family. Mary and Joseph taught Jesus good morals and standard behavioral patterns. The parents of Jesus made him to be steadfast in faith and to relate well with others. “When they had done everything the law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth”(Lk. 2:39).
From the Holy Family we learn that the law of God and of the land should be respected. That the child should be guided by the parents to develop strong faith in God (cf. Heb.11:8. 11-12ff). That every family is a domestic school/church where children should learn good moral standards. The family is the first place where love , peace and unity must be maintained. The children should learn from the family that charity begins at home. We also should learn from the Holy Family that there is no place like home. The family is where everyone should not afraid to stay. For God says: “Have no fear , Abram, I am your shield, your reward will be very great” (Gen. 15:1-6, 21:1-3). May God bless our families, amen.
