THE WILL TO DO GOOD

FRIDAY HOMILY; 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME -YEAR A

By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

THEME: The will to do good!

Rom.7:18-25; Luke 12:54-59

In my Senior Secondary 3 days at the minor seminary, I had a friend in the junior class that was perfect in nearly everything. He was handsome, smart and talented. He was also very friendly with everyone. We all liked him. He even had a little Bible that he read every night before going to bed. But he sometimes took things that didn’t belong to him. When I spoke with him about it, he couldn’t explain why he did this one thing, and he was so remorseful, I felt my heart break. I knew he made efforts, yet he couldn’t seem to stop the bad habit.

Friends, we sometimes can’t explain why we do some of the negative things we do. Each time this happens, we are sorry. We hate ourselves. We wish we could turn back the hands of time. Yet we go right back to those things after crying our eyes out. Why? St Paul tells us that the body follows a different law that battles against the spirit. We cannot hope to gain strength of will except through Jesus Christ our Lord. Did I mention that I finally took that my young friend before the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel? I didn’t believe at the time that he would change. But he did, eventually. I was much more surprised than he was. Take those bad habits to the Lord in prayer today!

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend ahead!
