(Luke 9:7-9) Friday of the Twenty Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus asked His apostles who do people say He was. The apostles said He was John the Baptist who was beheaded by Herod, Elijah, or a prophet. Jesus must have came across authoritatively and powerfully that He was mistaken to be one of the revered prophets like John and Elijah. Finally Jesus asked the apostles themselves. At this point, Jesus had been with them for quite a long time and had heard His teachings and witnessed His miracles. Peter, in response, made a confession that He is the Anointed One, the Christ, the Messiah.

Our knowledge of Jesus determines how we relate with Him. If He is a provider, He is only recognized and believed to give what we need. If a healer or miracle worker, He cures sicknesses. If a savior, He will deliver us from our sins and bring us to His Kingdom. Thus, if He fails to provide, heal, and save, we lose faith and abandon Him. In other words, the relation is limited to those situations. Such is what Jesus wanted to know. Have the people developed a true and full faith in Him? Or, are their knowledge of Him only dependent in their particular relation with Him? Ultimately, do they see Him as the Messiah or just one of the prophets?

Our answer to this very important question is more vital. How do we relate now to Jesus. Are we the kind who will desert Him once our prayers are not answered? Are we going to question His divinity when He could not make miracles when we beckon Him to do so? Or do we continue to believe Him through thick and thin, rain or shine, answer or no answer, suffering or no suffering, no matter what happens? Do we still see Him as the Messiah no matter what?
