CATHOLIC HOMILY FOR EASTER SUNDAY

CATHOLIC HOMILY FOR EASTER SUNDAY

THEME: CHRIST IS RISEN. ALLELUIA!

BY: Fr Francis Onwnali

HOMILY: The empty tomb and the neatly folded burial cloths, were signs that led the Beloved Disciple to believe that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead. In the witness of the Apostles, and the faithfulness, courage and love of our fellow Christians, we too have powerful signs that Christ is risen and lives among us. Observing them, our faith cries out: Alleluia!

Our readings today remind us it is not just a historical fact that Jesus rose from the dead, but it is a life-transforming event, not only for Jesus, but also for all who believe in Jesus. This is what Peter narrated in his speech in Cornelius’ house (Acts 10: 34, 37-43). Jesus is risen and has appeared and eaten with His disciples- HE IS ALIVE! This truth, He has entrusted to all who believe in Him to proclaim. By virtue of our Baptism, we are part of the commissioned disciples. Hence, at the Easter Vigil we renewed our baptismal promises to keep this Truth of His rising from the dead alive in our life.

In the gospel (John 20: 1-9), John narrates the empty tomb encounter of Mary Magdalene, John and Peter, which sparked their believe in the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise of rising from the dead on the third day (John 20: 1-9).

Dear friends, St. Paul is admonishing us to look for the things in heaven, where Christ is because we have been brought to new life in Him. We are called to be witnesses of the Risen Lord to others. We must be filled with joy! (Col. 3: 1-4).

I pray as we journey in life today, we will live as Easter people, filled with joy. May our old ways of life not dominate us again, rather, may we be bearers of justice, peace and love. As Christ sacrificed and poured out His life for us, may we live for others especially at this challenging time in our history.

Have a Happy and Joyful Easter celebration!
